The official prequel series of Fans of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has been confirmed! The announcement was made this weekend during Anime NYC 2025 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
Publisher Yen Press revealed that Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Prelude is coming to the overseas audience soon. Set for release in North America, it will let you dive into five new short stories in the series’ fantasy world.
Yen Press hasn’t announced a specific U.S. release date for the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End prequel yet. Meanwhile, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 is already set to premiere on Crunchyroll in January 2026.
The anime’s first season became one of the most celebrated series of 2024, earning multiple nominations at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Season 2 continues Frieren’s reflective journey alongside Fern, Stark, and the rest of her companions.
What else do we know about the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End prequel?
The prequel novel was first published in Japan in April 2024. While Frieren’s original story focused on her travels after the Demon King’s defeat, Prelude focuses both on the main trio of heroes and side characters like Kanne and Lawine.
It even revisits Aura the Guillotine, the striking yet dangerous demon. Kanehito Yamada, the writer of the original manga, is overseeing the upcoming project. So, you can expect the short stories to stay true to the tone of the series but with entirely new perspectives.
The Frieren manga, which is still ongoing in Japan, is distributed in the U.S. by Viz Media. On the other hand, Season 1 is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
