A new chapter in the Made in Abyss saga is on the horizon! The announcement came in today morning that the series is moving from television to the big screen soon. The upcoming Made in Abyss anime movie will be a part of a movie series.

The first instalment, Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Awakening Mystery), is set to premiere in 2026. It will pick up where the 2022 television season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, left off.

What else do we know so far about the upcoming Made in Abyss anime movie?

Director Masayuki Kojima will be leading the project. Series composer Hideyuki Kurata and character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda are returning as well, having worked on previous adaptations.

Meanwhile, Kinema Citrus will once again handle animation of the Made in Abyss anime movie. They’re known for productions such as The Rising of the Shield Hero and My Happy Marriage.

The voice cast remains unchanged, too, with Miyu Tomita as Riko, Mariya Ise as Reg, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa. A newly released visual introduces two fresh faces to the universe, Tepaste and Cravagli, shown inside the adventurers’ hangout, Katsuraku-tei.

The news makes me want to watch the series all over again!

Made in Abyss began as a manga serialized on Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma. Written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi, it has released 14 tankōbon volumes so far.

The story follows an orphaned girl named Riko from the town of Ōrth, which sits on the edge of a colossal pit known as the Abyss. She’s driven by the dream of becoming a great Cave Raider like her mother, who went missing a few years ago.

She finds and befriends a humanoid robot boy named Reg. Together, they descend into an Abyss that leads deep into the Earth, in hopes of finding her mother.
