The Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery anime movie has dropped a new key visual. Kinema Citrus has now confirmed the release date, which is October 23rd, 2026, for Japanese theatres. The announcement was made during the Made in Abyss stage event at AnimeJapan.
First announced in August 2025, Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery is Part 1 of the anime movie series. The voice cast from the television anime is returning for the film. It includes Mariya Ise as Reg, Miyu Tomita as Riko, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa.
The creative team behind the anime is also the same as that of the TV series. Masayuki Kojima is returning to direct the film. He previously worked on titles such as Black Bullet and Tibetan Dog. Hideyuki Kurata is handling series composition, having worked on Samurai Flamenco and The World God Only Knows.

Watched the TV series yet?
The Made in Abyss original television series aired from July to September 2017. It was followed by the sequel film Dawn of the Deep Soul, which premiered in Japan in January 2020. The second season, titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, aired from July 2022 to September 2022, continuing the story after the film.
The series originates from the Japanese manga written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi. The manga has been serialised online in Takeshobo’s digital publication Web Comic Gamma since October 2012.
The story follows an orphaned girl, Riko, who befriends a part-robot boy, Reg. Together, they descend into a massive underground chasm known as the Abyss in hopes of exploring its depths and finding Riko’s mother.
