It’s exciting news as Yuto Suzuki’s Sakamoto Days has been confirmed to be adapted into a live-action film. The announcement came through the 43rd issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. With the manga on its cover, it mentions that a live-action movie is in development.

What else do we know about the Sakamoto Days live-action film?

The project is scheduled to hit theatres during Japan’s Golden Week in 2026, and it will be released in two parts. More details on this will arrive on September 23rd, which is tomorrow.

Leading the cast is Meguro Ren, a member of Snow Man. He is stepping into the role of Taro Sakamoto, the protagonist. Directing the project is Fukuda Yuichi, director of the 2017 live-action version of Gintama.

Since its serialisation began in November 2020, Sakamoto Days has produced 23 collected volumes in Japan and 18 English volumes through VIZ Media.

The anime adaptation premiered in January 2025 and has been streaming on Netflix. Masaki Watanabe at TMS Entertainment will be directing it. It became one of Netflix’s most-watched anime within just six months of its release.

Read the manga or watched the anime?

Sakamoto Days is full of humour, high-energy fights, and heartfelt family moments. All of these contributed to it becoming a hit manga and anime, locally and globally.

The story revolves around Taro Sakamoto, a once-legendary assassin. He trades the underworld for a family life and a corner store, only to find that his past refuses to stay buried.

The move into live-action film is one of the riskiest ventures for the Sakamoto Days franchise so far. Let’s hope it’s able to match the success of the manga and the anime.
