Netflix is bringing a fresh spin to one of Japan’s oldest stories. They’re dropping an anime film Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, which will premiere worldwide on January 22nd, 2026. The anime will reintroduce a centuries-old story to the new generation.

The film marks the feature-length directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita. He previously gained recognition for his stunning opening sequences in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura.

On the production front, Studio Colorido, the team behind Penguin Highway and A Whisker Away, is the producer of the film. They’re working alongside Yamashita’s own Studio Chromato. Watch the latest trailer that Netflix dropped for Cosmic Princess Kaguya! here.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is inspired by The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is one of the oldest Japanese folktales. Cosmic Princess Kaguya! will turn this ancient lore into a futuristic, music-driven visual experience.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! takes place in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi. Music and animation collide in a live performance format in the movie, mixing fantasy, emotion, and Yamashita’s trademark 3D camerawork. Leading the voice cast are Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha, and Saori Hayami as Yachiyo.

Music is at the heart of this project, and it’s an all-star lineup from the Vocaloid scene. It includes ryo from supercell, known for creating the Hatsune Miku classic Melt. He joins forces with kz from livetune, 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot to craft the film’s original soundtrack.

Meanwhile, the character designs come from Hechima, known for The Idolmaster Gakuen, and Akihiro Nagae, who worked on Drifting Home. You can learn more about the upcoming anime on the Netflix website.
