Whilst I wouldn’t encourage aiding in the discomfort of those you know personally, it serves many benefits to traumatise your Combatants. Find out the full extent in my Chaos Zero Nightmare Breakdown Guide, telling you how to trigger breakdowns and why you should do it.

Chaos Zero Nightmare Breakdown Guide – How To Do It

To trigger breakdowns in units, you need to enlist them into Chaos Manifestation on Deep Trauma Mode. To activate this run, you need a character in your loadout who has experienced a breakdown before. I recommend Rin, as she has one at the start of the game, and she’s a freebie unit.

You should also match the difficulty with your unit levels, so you don’t overdo the combat. The goal is to let your characters take as many hits as possible without dying. After all, a corpse cannot break down. Fortunately, you don’t need to clear the level either, so long as you take enough hits.

How Counselling Works

There are two Counselling routes to take with each of your breakdown units.

  • Delete Memories
    • Erase Combatants’ memories to remove their Deep Trauma state in exchange for their Frail Data. Frail Data cannot be restored after this point.
    • This is a straightforward route, as it ensures your unit will return to normal; however, you’ll repair their breakdown without keeping any of their data.
  • Counselling
    • Counselling is riskier as it’s a choice-based route, and your therapy selection will impact their affinity and stability. The goal is to stabilise your unit before discharging to gain new Frail Data and help them recognise and work past their traumas.

Why Breakdowns Are Useful

If you visit the Psychotherapy Area after completing Counselling with a character, you’ll generate Gems.

Each character has three breakdown routes to explore, with each that you monitor and maintain generating 50 Gems per completion. After achieving all three breakdowns, you’ll gain an additional 150 Gems, totalling 300 Gems per character route.

Since this applies to all characters, you can passively farm Gems even on units you wouldn’t typically use. It’s a fun excuse to try out new team builds.
