Dark Horse Comics has teamed up with Lucasfilm to launch a Kickstarter project. Titled The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope — The Manga, it digs deep into Hisao Tamaki’s Eisner Award-winning manga take on the original 1977 film.

The book isn’t just a reprint of the old adaptation from 1997. It has fully detailed Tamaki’s original art boards, scanned in high resolution. Every pencil line, margin note, and pasted caption is clear and visible.

As Tamaki said, “A New Hope? Absolutely. I have to draw Star Wars.”

The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope campaign marks the first time Dark Horse has ever turned to Kickstarter. They’re using it to roll out a range of limited collector-focused editions that won’t be available anywhere else.

There’s the Collector’s Edition, split into two hardcover volumes with Tamaki’s Japanese lettering kept intact while an all-new English translation runs in the margins. Its exclusive blue-and-red design is a nod to the Force’s light and dark sides.

A more stripped-down version called the Collector’s Edition – Tamaki Variant has 260 sets. Meanwhile, the Deluxe Signed Collector’s Edition is limited to just 250 sets.

The Masterpiece Edition is the most extensive one. An oversized release, it measures 10.85×15.05 inches. It recreates the art boards at full scale and packs them in a faux-leather clamshell case.

Alongside it comes a 104-page companion volume that includes translated dialogue inspired by the Japanese dub. The Signed Masterpiece Edition is limited to 250 units.

The Signed Darth Vader Masterpiece Edition is the most exclusive of all. Restricted to just 25 sets, it features Vader-themed elements unique to that version.
