A new promotional trailer for the upcoming anime Goodbye, Lara is out. It introduces more of its voice cast as well as an early listen to its opening theme. The scheduled broadcast in Japan is in July 2026. Keep reading to get the full scoop!
First, let’s talk about the Goodbye, Lara opening theme
The opening song is titled Sayonara, Lara. It’s performed by Ikimonogatari. Meanwhile, the additional cast members joining the project include Tomohiro Ono as Yoshiya Otsu, Mitsuaki Madono as Makoto Otsu, Nanae Sumitomo as Ema Otsu, and Masaki Terasoma as Rowan.
Previously, the team confirmed the other performers. There’s Hana Hishikawa in the lead role of Lara and Nana Kawaishi as Mari Otsu. Also, Ayumu Murase will be voicing Luca and Rica Fukami will be voicing Grace.
The producer of the series is Kinema Citrus, with Takushi Koide directing. The creative team also includes Anna Kawahara, overseeing series composition, Shiori Tani, handling character designs, and Yuma Yamaguchi composing the music.
The Goodbye, Lara project marks a milestone effort for Kinema Citrus
That’s because it was actually developed to commemorate its 15th anniversary. The concept behind Goodbye, Lara takes inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen and reinterprets The Little Mermaid within a contemporary Japanese setting.
The narrative follows Lara, a mermaid princess deeply cherished by her father, the Sea King, and her sisters. Her story begins with a forbidden romance with a human prince, prompting her to seek life on land.
She consumes a potion created by Grace to become human. But she’s deceived into drinking another mixture that causes her to dissolve into bubbles. It effectively ends her life unless she can one day discover true love.
That opportunity arrives two centuries later, when Lara is reborn in Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. With a second chance at existence, she resumes her search for genuine love, this time in a vastly different world from the one she once knew.
