Chiikawa, the cute character from the popular Japanese manga series, is getting its first anime movie! It will be the first time that Chiikawa’s world, including its joys, mysteries, and dangers, will be on cinema screens.
The anime is called Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island
And the Japanese title is Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu. The original writer and illustrator Nagano is writing the screenplay for the movie. Kei Oikawa, whose previous work includes the Umamusume anime, is directing it.
Cygames Pictures, the studio known for Umamusume Pretty Derby: Beginning of a New Era, is the producer of the movie. It’s handling production independently from the television series, which continues to be animated by Doga Kobo.
The announcement came with new celebratory illustrations from Nagano. Voice actors Haruka Aoki, Makoto Tanaka, and Ari Ozawa are reprising their roles as Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi respectively.
Set to premiere in summer 2026, the Chiikawa anime movie will adapt the manga’s longest-running story. It’s the Siren Arc, also called the Island Arc, which was originally posted between March and November 2023.
The arc begins the way many Chiikawa adventures do, with a seemingly harmless invitation. The lure is a flyer promising rewards for island subjugation work. The rewards also include an assortment of island-only foods ranging from ramen to sweet-and-spicy treats that are free.
Usagi is the one who stumbles onto the flyer first, literally, arriving with it stuck to his face. Hachiware inspects the details, Chiikawa follows, and soon the group finds themselves sailing toward an island training camp.
As part of the announcement, Cygames has dropped a teaser visual for Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island. It captures the trio aboard a boat, gazing at a night sky lit by a full moon.
