Nearly three decades after Neon Genesis Evangelion first aired, the franchise is returning to animation in a smaller way. The team has announced a new short anime for Neon Genesis Evangelion. It will run for approximately 13 minutes and will debut exclusively at the EVANGELION:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion event in Japan.

The screening is scheduled for February 2026. Rebuild of Evangelion gave us a definitive ending to Hideaki Anno’s long-running series. It was capped by 2021’s Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time. So, it will be quite a surprise to see what this new anime will bring to the table.

The short has been announced specifically for the anniversary celebration. It’s currently described only as a special video, with no title, cast details, or story information. Hideaki Anno serves as supervisor while also handling planning duties and writing the script himself.

Meanwhile, Naoyuki Asano will direct the Neon Genesis Evangelion short anime. He has previously worked as an animation director on Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time. Additional credits include Kazuya Tsurumaki as co-director, Shinji Higuchi handling storyboards, and Kazuki Todoroki as assistant to the general director.

Excited to celebrate Neon Genesis Evangelion 30th anniversary with the short anime?

EVANGELION:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion will take place from February 21st to February 23rd, 2026, at Yokohama Arena. Alongside the special screening of the new short anime, the event lineup includes a new kabuki performance, multiple song performances, and a fan market.

Attendees with a Stage Area Ticket will be able to view the short at no additional charge. The ticket grants access to all performances held in the Stage Area throughout the day. Stage Area Tickets for both Arena S seats and Stand A seats are currently on sale through eplus.
