Nintendo has revealed more details on the new version of Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2. After an earlier announcement, they followed up with a new trailer with gameplay updates, multiplayer features, visual upgrades, new controls, and several Switch 2-exclusive additions.
The new version is bringing Fox McCloud and the rest of the Star Fox team back into action on June 25th, 2026. The upcoming release is a cinematic remake built from the foundation of Star Fox 64, the Nintendo 64 classic that was known as Lylat Wars in Europe and Australia.
Star Fox needs no introduction, does it?
The game centres on the conflict between Fox McCloud’s squad and the villainous scientist Andross. Andross is attempting to seize control of the Lylat star system, leaving Fox and his allies as the last line of defense.
You’ll pilot the iconic Arwing fighter across the system. Engaging enemy forces, you’ll perform manoeuvres such as barrel rolls and somersaults to avoid attacks and stay alive during battles. You can also brake in mid-air to shake pursuers and activate boosts for extra speed.
The announcement came during a Nintendo Direct presentation featuring Nintendo alongside Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi. It even included a special prologue centred on Fox’s father, James McCloud.
This latest release marks the fourth remake of the original Super Nintendo Star Fox. The lineage includes Star Fox 64 on Nintendo 64, Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS, and Star Fox Zero on Wii U. Unlike the others, this Switch 2 edition is emphasising a more cinematic presentation and a complete visual overhaul.
The developers have rebuilt the visuals to take advantage of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. There are new cinematic sequences throughout the adventure, featuring fully voiced dialogue and previously unseen missions. Watch the trailer below to get a gist of it.
