An unusual feline lead is heading to television! NyanNyan Factory’s Chainsmoker Cat manga is getting a TV anime adaptation. Known in Japan as YaniNeko or Yani Neko, it’ll premiere in Japan in July 2026. It will air on Tokyo MX, TOKYO MX, and other stations.
Taku Kimura of Star Wars: Visions Tattooine Rhapsody fame will direct the series. He’s working through Studio Lemon while directing it at Bibury Animation Studios. Meanwhile, series composition and scripts will be by Takashi Aoshima, known for The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You.
Riki Matsuura is overseeing the character designs, also noted for the devil design on Chainsaw Man The Movie Reze Arc. Music for the anime is by Keiichi Suzuki, whose past work includes Saint Young Men. The team released the project’s first teaser visual and trailer. It offers an early look at Yani or Yanineko spending her days lazily, smoking tar on the balcony of her room.

The manga series takes place in a world where humans and beastmen coexist. The story follows Yaniko or Yanineko, a catgirl living in a small apartment building in modern-day Japan. She’s addicted to smoking despite the toll it takes on her environment, her psyche, and her family, spending almost all of her money on cigarettes.

Yuko Natsuyoshi has been cast as the voice of the heavy-smoking catgirl. Her past work includes Julia in Hana-Kimi and Sasha Necron in The Misfit of Demon King Academy. Also, they will announce additional cast members later.
The original Chainsmoker Cat manga is written and illustrated by NyanNyanFactory. NyanNyan serialised it in Kodansha’s seinen magazine Weekly Young Magazine since February 2023. You can check it out here.
