Hideo Kojima’s hit game Death Stranding is getting an original anime series called Death Stranding Isolations. The announcement was made at the Disney+ Originals Preview held at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
It’s the first time Kojima Productions has partnered with a global streaming platform
Kojima stepped on stage and said the series will stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2027. Most of us had been speculating about it for a while already.
Kojima is serving as executive producer and working alongside director Takayuki Sano from E&H production. Joining them is illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov, who you’ll recognise from Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.
New concept art from Kuvshinov was shown at the venue, giving a glimpse of the show. E&H production, which includes some of Japan’s top animation talent, is handling the traditional hand-drawn 2D art style.
The anime series exists in the same universe as the games, but isn’t adapting any existing storyline. Death Stranding Isolations introduces a new narrative focused on a young man and woman navigating their own struggles as humanity deals with extreme isolation.
What’s the story of Death Stranding Isolations?
Long before the current events, a phenomenon known as the Death Stranding devastated nations. Lonesome souls of the dead reached into the physical world, causing explosions that wiped out civilisation.
People who survived became isolated and disconnected. It’s a world where a legendary porter travels to reconnect those left behind.
The upcoming show shifts the viewpoint to other characters in North America. There’s an old man chasing salvation through unusual methods, a female warrior pushing for endless conflict, a boy holding a grudge against Sam Bridges, and a girl who has settled into loneliness. Their paths eventually cross in the series.
