Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back is getting adapted into a live-action movie, which is planned to be released in 2026. The film will be produced by K2 Pictures. But the best part about the announcement is that the director of the project is Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Hirokazu Kore-eda is the Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker behind Shoplifters, Nobody Knows, Maborosi, and, more recently, Monsters and the Asura series on Netflix. The production has already completed filming in Nikaho City in Akita Prefecture, with post-production now in progress.
Look Back, the Japanese one-shot web manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, was published on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ in July 2021. It got an anime adaptation, which was released in Japan in June 2024. Directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama and produced by Studio Durian, it became a major success. GKIDS later released the anime in North America.
If you’re wondering what the story of Look Back is, the movie, let me give you a quick rundown. The story follows Ayumu Fujino, a young manga artist. Her classmates celebrate her for the comics she draws for the class newspaper.
The other main character is Kyomoto, a reclusive student whose artwork sparks rivalry and insecurity in Fujino initially. However, after a certain period, Fujino eventually gains a shared drive to improve. The two later join hands to create a manga together.
The Look Back movie will have a 2026 premiere
The announcement about the movie arrived through Fujimoto’s editor, Shihei Lin, on X. It was accompanied by two teaser visuals showing Fujino and Kyomoto in the snow and another of them working intensely on their manga together. Daiju Koide, known for producing Shin Kamen Rider, is producing the new film at K2Pictures.
