A television anime adaptation of Fungus and Iron has entered production. The production team made an official website and X account go live today. So, yes, Ayaka Katayama’s sci-fi action manga is coming to TV screens soon.
Fungus and Iron, known in Japanese as Kin to Tetsu, is written and illustrated by Ayaka Katayama. The series began serialisation in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in March 2021, appearing in the April 2021 issue.
In August 2021, the manga went on hiatus due to Katayama going on maternity leave, before resuming serialisation in March 2022. As of October 2025, its individual chapters have been compiled into eight tankōbon volumes released in Japan. Meanwhile, in January 2022, Kodansha USA started publishing the official English edition.
So, what’s the story of Fungus and Iron anime?
Set in a dystopian world where humanity is ruled by fungi, the story imagines parasites that burrow into the human brain. They take control and strip away freedom, thought, and emotion. Society functions under an order imposed by the World Government known as Amigasa.
Within that tightly controlled system exists a single irregular presence. Dante, the strongest soldier, is also imperfect, yet that imperfection allows him to retain his sense of self. When he encounters a girl and later crosses paths with Ether, a rebel organisation that wields the power of iron, his perspective shifts.
Discovering a sense of freedom in the outside world, Dante chooses to stand against the fungi’s oppression. The central conflict is stark: rule by fungi or rebel by iron, as an ultimate dystopian sci-fi battle begins.
