A fresh seasonal illustration has arrived for The Apothecary Diaries. The official X account of The Apothecary Diaries anime has revealed a new visual on the edible flower buds of giant butterbur plants.
The Apothecary Diaries anime Giant Butterbur visual is beautiful!
The artwork places Maomao alongside Luomen, capturing a quieter moment between daughter and father. They are looking at a plant of giant butterbur, with buds growing out of it. In case you’re thinking it’s a fantastical plant, well, you’re wrong.
Giant butterbur doesn’t only exist in The Apothecary Diaries anime and its new visual. It’s a real-life herbaceous perennial plant native to East Asia (China, Japan, Korea). Known for its massive, 3-5 foot wide kidney-shaped leaves, it’s highly prized in Japanese cuisine.
Meanwhile, the series is preparing for both Season 3 of the television anime and its first original film. The adaptation of Natsu Hyuga and Touko Shino’s light novel series quickly turned into a breakout success after its debut a couple of years ago.
The production team has kept interest steady through a monthly lineup of seasonal visuals that depict Maomao and the people around her in slices of everyday life. This month’s Giant Butterbur visual is another one of them.
Season 3 will begin sometime later this October as part of the Fall 2026 anime schedule. The upcoming season will be split into two cours separated by a break, with Part 2 planned for next April under the Spring 2027 anime schedule.
Along with the TV series, The Apothecary Diaries will also reach theatres in Japan this year. The film will present an original story written by series writer Natsu Hyuga. The theatrical project is set to premiere in Japan in December 2026, marking the franchise’s feature film debut.
You can learn more about the anime and movie on the official website or X account.
